Three-Dimensional Finite Element Simulation of Penetration of an Oil Well Perforator

  • Shaping and penetrating of an oil well perforator into its casing and surrounding rock were numerically simulated by using the ALE method and LS-DYNA3D. The jet formation process, the jet velocity distribution curve, and the liner kinetic energy versus time were numerically computed, respectively. The perforation time of the jet lasted 14 μs, the maximum speed of the jet was 5 558 m/s, and the calculated kinetic energy of the liner was 5300 J. With the defined failure strain in LS-DYNA to achieve concrete and surrounding rock crushing conditions, the simulations show that the penetration capability of the jet reduces with the failure strain of concrete and rock target plate increasing;the larger the failure strain is, the greater the energy consumption of the jet.
