Design and Performance Analysis of Non-Circular Expanding Ring

  • In order to reduce the leakage rate at the auxiliary sealing surface and incision, a non-circular design method was proposed. This kind of design method can reduce the possibility of the instability failure, improve the reliability and service life of the ring seal, and resolve the problem caused by the failure of the seal ring in the transmission system of heavy load vehicles. The non-circular seal ring design was studied by using classical curved beam theory and finite element method respectively. The stress and deformation of the assembled seal ring were analyzed. The shape of the non-circular seal ring in the free state, which can achieve the ideal fit of the seal ring outer cylinder and the shaft sleeve on the condition of assembly, was obtained based on the inverse finite element method. The application conditions of the analytical solution and the influence of incision on the shape of the non-circular seal ring were also analyzed. The result of finite element analysis shows that the non-circular seal ring has narrower gap, lower leakage rate and higher tightness.
