Experimental Study of the Fracture Behavior of Bamboo Under Tension Based on Digital Speckle Correlation Method

Abstract
The fracture behavior of moso bamboo under tensile load was experimentally studied using digital speckle correlation method (DSCM). Based on the captured images and the DSCM measured displacement and strain fields, the classic fracture mode and mechanism of the bamboo was analyzed and summarized, and the fracture toughness of bamboo was quantitatively measured. The experimental results show that, when the specimen is loading, a transverse crack firstly appeares in the Shiraia bambusicola and then expands to the bamboo meat, finally the crack turns to longitudinal and the specimen completely fractured. The critical crack tip opening displacement (COD) was obtained using the DSCM measured displacement field, and the fracture toughness of specimen was then calculated as <em<K</em<<sub<Ⅰ c</sub<=4.2 MPa·m<sup<0.5</sup<.
