Effect of Frequency Modulation on the Performance of Pulse Compression in Radar Linear Frequency Modulation

  • The effect of frequency modulation on compressed-pulse signal-amplitude and pulse-width of linear frequency modulation(LFM) radar were analyzed for both the matched filter and the weighted filter. The method using sine phase modulation to produce multiple compressed-signals is also analyzed. Analytical expressions were derived and computer simulation results given. The results showed that the effect of frequency modulation on compressed-pulse signal-amplitude and pulse-width of LFM radar is determined directly by the frequency modulation mismatch factor <em<χ</em< (the product of frequency modulation relative variations and pulse compression ratio). When <em<χ</em< is large enough, signal-amplitude decreases <em<0.54 χ </em< times and pulse-width increases <em< χ/k</em< (when <em< k>1)</em< or <em< χ</em< (when <em< k<1)</em< times.
