Abstract
Pure MoS<SUB<2</SUB< thin films are prone to rapid deterioration by oxidation. MoS<SUB<2</SUB<-based composite coatings, consisting of Ti or titanium nitride (TiN) in addition to molybdenum disulfide (MoS<SUB<2</SUB<) were synthesized by nano-compound unbalanced plasma plating technique. Scanning electron microscope, dry drilling and turning tests were used to determine the structure, composition, and tribological performance of the MoS<SUB<2</SUB<-based coatings. The experimental results indicate that these MoS<SUB<2</SUB<-based composite coatings are much more wear resistant and less sensitive to atmospheric water vapor. These coatings display excellent industrial characteristics for a wide range of turning and drilling applications.
