Abstract
Dynamic mechanical properties and fracture characteristics as well as the fracture surfaces of W fiber/Zr based amorphous matrix composites are investigated by means of Hopkinson's pressure bar and SEM alongside with for cylinder composites samples. The experimental results show that the W fiber/Zr based amorphous matrix composites have very high values in their dynamic compressive strength, and the dynamic compressive strength increases with the W fiber volumetric fraction. The dynamic compressive strength of the composites is 2 650 MPa with 60 vo1% continuous tungsten fiber, and the failure mode is of a mixed mode combining shear with the W fiber buckling and splitting. The dynamic compressive process discloses the typical melt and solidification characteristic of Zr based amorphous matrix.
