Abstract
Gives a comparison between the two kinds of laser guide stars resulting from Rayleigh backscattering and sodium resonant scattering respectively. Relationships of the required laser pulse energy for sodium guide stars with the telescope aperture as well as with desired performance of the adaptive telescope are discussed. The marked difference in the required laser energy as reflected in different literature is explained.
