Self-Rolling Characteristics of Wrap Around Fin-Body Combinations

  • Introduces wind tunnel test results for the self-rolling characteristics of wrap around fin-body combinations. They include the results of measurement for the aerodynamic force and the pressure distribution. The results on aerodynamic force demonstrated that the wrap around fin (WAF) configuration exhibits a self-induced rolling moment. The results on pressure distribution demonstrated that the causes of the self-induced rolling moment for WAF configuration result from the self-induced normal force that depends on the unequal pressure distribution over both sides of the fin. Results on the measured pressure also indicated that the difference between the load distribution of the equal thickness WAF and that of unequal thickness WAF was small, if the relative thickness is same. Consequently the influence of variation in thickness on the aerodynamic characteristics may be neglected.
