Effect of Chromatic Adaptation on the Color Appearance of Information Display on a Fluorescent Screen

  • The effect of chromatic adaptation of the human visual system to a complex background upon the color appearance of information displays is investigated with the binocular asymmetric matching method applied to the observation of color monitor screens in computer visual display terminals (VDT). The results of experiments show that there exist significant influence of surrounding average color, brightness and color differences between the target and its surrounding on color shifts evoked by chromatic adaptation. In assessing the color appearance induced by complex background, the human visual system can be treated as an information processing system in which the integrated response sensitivity varies with the average color and brightness of background.
