Some Experimental Study on the Light Emission From Abrasion of a Quartz Crystal and Rocks

  • Introduces two experimental methods- rectilinear slide/circular motion, for the study of light emission when a quartz crystal and a rock are abraded against each other. It has been found that the sum of the surface luminosity and the mechanical power density, is directly proportional to the frictional mechanical power density (coefficient of friction multiplied by pressure and velocity). When the values of the coefficient of friction and velocity are kept constant, the surface luminosity is proportional to the pressure, and when the values of the coefficient of friction and pressure are kept constant, the surface luminosity is proportional to the velocity. These results give some clues for the exploration of the phenomena of triboluminescence on occasions of earthquakes.
