Abstract

Experiments show thatdifferent coating thickness, coating materials and substrate materials have influence on the cutting toughness, to different degrees.This paper attempts at an approach to the failure mechanism, derives a formula for calculating the surface residual stress and explores the way to improve cutting toughness of coated carbide tools.
