Impact of Smartphone Use on Risk Preference in Consumer Decision-making

Abstract: Previous research has demonstrated that consumers’ behavior and decision-making processes differ significantly when they use different electronic devices. As consumers increasingly rely on various devices for decision-making, it has become more important to understand the differences between computers and smartphones. Drawing on the embodied cognition theory, it is proposed in the current study that using smartphones, as opposed to computers, enhances consumers’ perceived sense of control, leading to a tendency of risk-taking in decision making. Four experiments were conducted to test this hypothesis. Additionally, this research found that consumers’ self-construal moderates the effect of smartphone use on risk preference. Specifically, consumers with an independent self-construal display a stronger preference for risk when using smartphones compared to those with a dependent self-construal. Therefore, in corporate management practice, managers should pay attention to the impact of different devices on consumer decision-making, especially in the contexts of smartphone usage, and develop targeted marketing strategies to better guide high-risk consumer decisions.
