Abstract:
The increase of carbon dioxide emissions is the main reason for global warming; the effect of technology progress on carbon emission reduction has attracted more and more attention. Based on geographic economic distance, an interprovincial technology spillover network was constructed, and interprovincial R&D direct technology spillovers and indirect technology spillovers measured by network centrality were introduced into a panel econometric model for carbon emission factor analysis. The panel data of 29 provinces in China from 2000 to 2013 was used for empirical analysis. The results show that direct spillover of R&D across provinces has a significant inhibitory effect on carbon emissions but the indirect effect is not obvious. In different regions, the direct R&D technology spillovers of eastern and central provinces were negatively correlated with carbon emissions, while the spillovers of the western regions were not significant. Interprovincial R&D indirect technology spillover can significantly reduce carbon emissions in the central region; interprovincial R&D indirect technology spillover measured by proximity centrality in eastern regions is positively correlated with carbon emissions; interprovincial R&D indirect technology spillover measured by eigenvector in western regions is significantly positively correlated with carbon emissions.
