Abstract:
The contribution of education to economic growth has been well recognized, but their complex synergetic nexus and the contribution of different types of education to economy have not been systematically studied. Therefore, based on the system sciences, the paper employs the synergetics and CRITIC(Criteria Importance Through Inter-criteria Correlation)approach to develop the method to evaluate the synergetic degree of China's education-economy system and conduct empirical study during 1993-2012. The results indicate that, first, the quantity and application of scientific outputs, the enrollment rate from primary to secondary schools and the share of the tertiary industry in the economy have become the dominant factors for the order degree of China's higher education, basic education and economic growth sub-systems, respectively. Second, the order degree of basic education overall outweighs that of economic growth, while that of higher education ranks the lowest; however, the order degree of the three sub-systems has seen steady increase since 2003. Finally, China's education-economy complex system has realized the transition from disordered towards ordered development, while its synergetic degree appears still fairly low.
